2007 BCFI Grant Awardees

1. Casting for Recovery – Alaska 2005 - $2000
BCFI awards $2000 to this 3-day fly fishing retreat for women recovering from breast cancer, hosted by the YWCA of Anchorage for the past 11 consecutive years, this is one of the longest running CFR retreats in the nation.

2. ENCOREplus - $36,187
ENCOREplus is now in its 13th year as the largest and most significant local outreach program for screening services and early detection education. As the sole outreach provider for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program in the Anchorage bowl, YWCA’s ENCOREplus has referred thousands of women to screening services and has provided thousands more with important breast health information. The program provides a state-wide hotline and their priority population is the medically under served, low-income, uninsured or underinsured women, with emphasis on minority and older women.

2. Alaska Breast Cancer Advocacy Partners - $11,500
ABCAP's 600+ members are active in Alaska breast cancer support. They are in their eighth year as Alaska’s advocacy organization supporting breast cancer legislation in Alaska and in Washington D.C. They work with the National Breast Cancer Coalition and do an outstanding job in keeping government informed and engaged when it comes to breast cancer issues and funding.

3.Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation - $3,500
Native women are at a higher risk – the relative hazard of death was 58% higher for American Indian and Alaska Native women than for non-Hispanic White women. Women in outlying communities are definitely at a disadvantage for many reasons. That’s why we are proud to fund a new effort to educate the women in the Bristol Bay area on the importance of early breast cancer detection and treatment.

6. Alaska Cancer Research and Education Center - $29,175
This organization’s mission is to educate and provide greater access to clinical trials for cancer patients. It educates patients about and enrolls them in clinical trials. They work with physicians, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies to achieve their important research mission.

7. Phoenix Rising - $1,325
Virginia Smiley of Juneau is a tireless volunteer and breast cancer survivor. She is donating her time and efforts to keep her grass-roots education programs going in Southeast Alaska. She has done much to further our cause, and she continues her educational outreach in addition to conducting free weekly yoga sessions for breast cancer survivors.

9. Pink Ribbon Days - $4,235
This group organizes an annual educational fair and fund raiser. We are providing funds to help underwrite the costs of their fundraiser, and we are assured that they, in turn, donate all they raise at the event to breast cancer education, advocacy and research. While their mission is very much the same as ours, we support them in their efforts to reach audiences we might not be reaching.

10. University of Alaska Anchorage Student Health and Counseling Center -$1,000
We are proud to award $1000 to this organization which educates on breast cancer through student outreach efforts. They target a large student population with emphasis on the under served and work with the YWCA Encore program in distributing breast cancer awareness information. We applaud their efforts and wish them much success.

11. Cancer Connection, Juneau - $3,000
This group organizes and hosts an annual Women’s Health Forum and has done so for 10 years. Their mission is to assist cancer survivors and their families and to provide education and awareness resources. They work with the local hospital to provide the best local education event possible. 12. Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium - $17,500
ANTHC is developing an interactive breast health workshop for Alaska Native women in rural Alaska – a tool kit for sharing knowledge about breast cancer, including implementing community-based breast health workshops. We are pleased to provide funding to produce a culturally relevant DVD to be used as one of the education tools.
