2005 BCFI Grant Awardees

1. Casting for Recovery – Alaska 2005 - $2000
BCFI awards $2000 to this 3-day fly fishing retreat for women recovering from breast cancer, hosted by the YWCA of Anchorage for the past 9 consecutive years, making it one of the longest running retreats in the nation.

2. Alaska Breast Cancer Advocacy Partners - $3550
An organization active in Alaska breast cancer support and effective legislative watchdogs – BCFI awards ABCAP $3,550 which includes funding for two members to attend the National Breast Cancer Coalition training.

3. Affinityfilms - $3750
Our last grant to Affinityfilms was a couple of years ago to assist in the “Beyond Flowers” video production. This year, we are pleased to provide funds for Affinityfilms to research, develop and write proposals for the production of a new video that focuses on patients whose cancer has returned. The proposed title of the video is “When Cancer Comes Back: Living with Metastasis.”

4. Men Against Breast Cancer - $5000
Specific emphasis of this group is on men understanding the physical and emotional needs of their female partners and to help manage the many elements of the breast cancer crisis in the family. BCFI awards $5,000 to help Jonathan Lang with “Partners in Survival” training and workshop expenses.

5. Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club - $6000
BCFI awards $6000 toward acquisition of equipment to get them started on their mission to integrate elements of a national wellness and rehabilitation program for breast cancer survivors, into their rowing for recovery program.

6. Alaska Cancer Research and Education Center - $19,500
This organization’s mission is to educate and provide greater access to clinical trials for cancer patients. BCFI awards $19,500 to fund a part-time research assistant specifically to work with all Anchorage hospitals and to offer a wide choice of breast cancer clinical trials to Alaska breast cancer patients.

7. The Cancer Connection - $3,000
BCFI awards for the third year, $3,000 to this Juneau-based, grassroots, all-volunteer organization to help them to produce an annual Women's Health Forum, a free education and awareness event.

8. Jamie Lang - $1,900
Jamie is a graduate of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Project LEAD course (Advocacy Training to influence Congress for funding of breast cancer research and early detection). We know that Jamie will continue to advocate at the local and national levels, and we award her $1900 to attend advanced training. We applaud her for all the work she has done in these areas.

9. Pink Ribbon Days - $3,650
This group organizes an annual educational fair and fund raiser. We award $3650 to underwrite the costs of this fundraiser, which serves to educate the public on breast cancer issues and early detection and donates to national breast cancer research.

10. ENCOREplus - $30,000
ENCOREplus is now in its 11th year as the largest and most significant outreach program for screening services and educating women about the importance of early detection. As the sole outreach provider for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program in the Anchorage bowl, YWCA’s ENCOREplus has referred thousands of women to screening services and has provided thousands more with important breast health information, particularly the importance of early detection. We're very proud to award “ENCOREplus” $30,000.
